The Carpet Beetles

The title "carpet beetle" certainly says it all about these blighters.  These bugs are infamous for infesting areas where you should not go barefoot. Worse, they're not only infesting your carpet.  It's being eaten, eggs are being placed in it, and it's even being irrevocably ruined. If you're like the majority of people, you had no idea what a carpet beetle was until you encountered one. You're now on a mission to avoid having another one. That is something that we can help you with.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE CARPET BEETLES?

Carpet beetles are, sadly, exactly what they sound like. Carpet beetles bury their eggs in fibrous materials such as carpets so that their progeny may consume them. Carpet beetles exist in a range of forms and sizes, but they are all oval and about 18 inches long. Carpet beetle color varies based on the species and stage of development.

In the United States, the three most common carpet beetle species are the Black carpet beetle, the Varied carpet beetle, and the Common carpet beetle.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE CARPET BEETLES?

Carpet beetles hide in dark, isolated parts of your home. They are sometimes confused with bed bugs because they will infest mattresses to devour dead skin cells left in the sheets. Unlike bed bugs, carpet beetles will not bite you. The bristly hairs on the bodies of carpet beetle larvae might irritate your skin if you are sensitive to them. Contact with carpet beetles might create a rash or bite like markings on your skin if you are sensitive to them.  Carpet beetles will, of course, chew through the fibers in your home. There will be noticeable damage to bed sheets, linens, clothes, drapes, and (of course) carpet.  Unlike moths, carpet beetles typically consume only one piece of cloth at a time. Their eating causes massive, distinct holes in the cloth.  To keep developing, beetle larvae will need to lose their skin while feeding.  A shed carpet beetle's skin is translucent, dry, and flaky. Carpet beetles expel their skin in regions where they feed.
